    Swelling

Why do teeth hurt?

A basic education into the causes of dental pain will help you better understand treatment options to resolve and prevent future pain. Our Calgary and Cochrane dentists are ready to help inform you about short and long term solutions.

  • Tooth decay or a chipped tooth can expose the sensitive dentin underneath. This often feels rough or painful to the tongue, and food can get stuck in the hole. If not treated, the damage can reach the tooth’s structure and nerve.

  • Gum tissue that covers tooth roots can pull back from poor brushing or flossing, brushing too hard, teeth clenching or grinding, or gum disease.

Exposed roots are more sensitive to hot and cold. If not treated, this sensitivity may make you avoid hot or cold foods.

  • Deep decay, tooth cracks, or very deep fillings can damage the tooth pulp (nerve). Irritated pulp often causes sensitivity to cold, mild temperatures, or heat.

The pulp can die, causing pain with pressure. If not treated, pulp problems can lead to more serious health issues.

  • Sometimes tooth pain comes from problems with the gums and bone that hold teeth. Causes include gum disease, clenching or grinding, poor oral hygiene, missed professional cleanings, and genetics. If not treated, loss of gum and bone support can make teeth loose and eventually lead to tooth loss.

  • Teeth clenching and/or teeth grinding can happen at night (when you are sleeping) and even can occur in the day time. This either habitual or related to stress (subconscious response), We understand that sometimes the level of pain can be very uncomfortable.

We provide short and long term solutions for Teeth Clenching and Grinding on an emergency basis.

Preventative Dental Care

Avoid tooth loss, root canals, fillings and other restorative dentistry with routine maintenance including dental cleanings and check-ups.

Solve Small Dental Problems

In many cases, we can preseve tooth structure and prevent tooth loss by addressing problems when they are smaller. Even some fillings can be done without dental freezing if they are in the enamel surface of the tooth. Our conservative dentists will sometimes do a “watch” or “observe” to see if changes are occuring before recommending treatment.

Goals for Our Patients

Our goal for every patients once they receive dental treatment is to become a “Recare Patient” where the only annual needs you have during a year is a cleaning and check-up. Our dentists and hygienists will recommend preventative approaches so that you need as little dentistry as possible.

Smile Design

If your teeth are healthy, we can help improve the cosmetic apperance of teeth for a more youthful and vibrant look!
