Children’s Dentistry

Our Calgary dentists and Cochrane dentists believe that prevention and timely treatment are essential to avoiding dental and overall health complications for children.

By fostering positive professional relationships early on, we promote regular preventive care and help prevent the development of more serious dental problems.

We warmly welcome children and families at both of our clinics!

Why Children’s Dentistry?

Positive Relationships

We believe that beginning visits to the dental clinic early can help build a positive relationship with the dental care tean and reduce the risk of future phobias or the need for sedation. We also know that people who have had negative experiences with dentists or dental treatments often require some degree of sedation as adults.

Starting Early

Avoid larger problems by addressing or preventing smaller ones. This is no different than other areas of life, where regular maintenance can make a big difference over time. We often hear, “Why spend the time to look after baby teeth that are going to fall out?” It’s important to keep them healthy because baby teeth allow proper chewing, maintain the space needed for adult teeth to erupt correctly, and neglect can lead to pain, infection, or premature loss. Not to mention that learning good oral habits early helps those behaviors become natural as children grow.

Promoting Health

Although cavities are largely preventable, they remain one of the most common chronic conditions a person may experience. If tooth decay is left untreated, it can develop into an abscess — a severe infection beneath the gums — which can spread to surrounding tissues and other parts of the body, potentially causing serious complications and, in very rare cases, life‑threatening outcomes.

Phases of Children’s Dentistry

  • Three young children sitting on a play mat in a bright indoor space, one of them holding a red ball.

    Infants

    AGES: UNDER 2
We recommend that infants be assessed within 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth or at the latest by one year of age.

Our goal is to have your child visit the dentist before there is a problem with their teeth.

  • Four children smiling and laughing, looking down at the camera.

    Children

    AGES: 2-12
At the beginning of this phase, patients will transition from their deciduous (baby) teeth to their permanent (adult) teeth.

Our primary goal for keeping teeth healthy is to prevent infection and keep spaces for adult teeth (orthodontic evaluation).

  • Group of five smiling young adults taking a selfie outdoors.

    Teens

    AGES: 13-17
During this phase of growth, continued habit reinforcement of oral hygiene becomes increasingly important.

A great time to start considering Invisalign® Teeth Alignment for mild orthodontic problems.

  • Group of six young adults smiling outdoors at sunset.

    Adults

    AGES: 18-21
During the young adult phase, we start to evaluate the presence, location, health and space for the eruption of wisdom teeth (also known as the third molars).

We also offer Invisalign® Teeth Alignment treatment for young adults that want to avoid metal braces.

Dental Check-up (Exam)

  • A woman receiving a dental checkup from a dentist in a clinic.

    Evaluation (Exam)

When you have a complete examination, we take baseline measurements, x-rays and sometimes 3D digital video scans to record your current presentation. We do an examination of your teeth, mouth, face and neck tissues.

These invaluable records are important in diagnosis of dental concerns.

  • A dentist using a tablet to examine a male patient in a dental clinic.

    Discussion

Afer a dental exam is done, our dentists will review your conerns, discuss our findings and then and then education you about your treatment options.

We provide options and you decide what is best for your health. We will also review preventative recommendations.

  • Close-up of a dental chart with a magnifying glass examining the teeth.

    Planning

A treatment plan outlines your treatment choices made during the discussion. We can provide treatment cost estimates.

With your request, our Reception Desk Team can send a Pre-Determination of Benefits electronically to your Dental Insurance Provider to find out how much is covered. Dental Financing is also available to suit any budget.

Do Children really need a Dental Cleaning and Check-up?

Dental Cleaning Prevention

if you want to keep your teeth healthy for as long as possible, it is important to start the process of maintaing dental health early. If deposits, such as calculus, plaque and tartar are left on the surface of teeth and roots, this can call recession (a loss of surrounding gums and bone). Over a number of years, gum disease, can cause the complete loss of teeth. Most children and adults should have a professional cleaning between 6-12 months. If gum disease is not controlled, it may require frequeny cleanings every 3-4 months or even specialist intervention.

Dental Check-up (Exam) Benefits

Having an exam every 12 months can help detect smaller dental and oral tissue problems before they become bigger ones. This can mean the difference between having a small filling to fix a cavity versus waiting and needing to have root canal treatment or even have a tooth removed. Dental X-rays are usually taken on an annual basis. We follow the FDA recommendations for intervals in taking dental x-rays: FDA/ADA Guidelines.
