Mouth Guards

Mouth Guards protect teeth from injury and wear

Our Calgary dentists and Cochrane dentists provide a wide range of treatments, including custom Sport Guards, Night Guards and Snore Guards tailored to individual needs.

Typically, the term mouth guards refers to protective appliances used for sports such as hockey, basketball, soccer and other contact sports (including wrestling, jiu-jitsu, karate, kickboxing and similar activities) to help prevent dental injuries and reduce the risk of concussions.

What are Mouth Guards?

Mouth Guards are Removable Appliances

Mouth Guards are appliances that you wear over your teeth to provide a cover intended to protect or aid in function. At Harvest Dental Care, mouth guards are custom made to fit your teeth for comfort. We can take a digital scan of your mouth instead of goopy impression trays. A digital scanner for digital impressions is particulary beneficial for those who have a gag reflex.

Prevention of Tooth Damange

Mouth Guards also know as Sports Guards, reduce injury caused by tooth-on-tooth contacts. They reduce the risk of tooth chipping and fracturing. We offer different variants to mouth guards depending on the type of activity that you are intending to play.

Mouth Guard Customization

One size does not fit all. We offer chairside customization to modify and refinish mouth guards with our in-clinic lab. For those who have gag reflexes and find it difficult to use a standard mouth guard, we can customize your appliance for you by reducing extensions and coverage for best comfort. We know what fits best for our patients!

Types of Mouth Guards

  • Youth hockey players in gear on the ice rink, focusing on a player in a green jersey with a red helmet.

    Sport Guards

Sport guards are pliable appliances worn on either the upper or lower teeth (usually upper for contact sports). They provide some protection from direct impacts but more importantly prevent tooth-to-tooth collisions.

These are important for use in football, hockey, martial arts, basketball, soccer and many other contact and non-contact sports.

We use branded, quality material, sport guards provided by Pro-Form®.

  • Close-up of a person removing braces from their teeth.

    Night Guards

This useful for those who clench or grind their teeth when they sleep. These fit on either you upper or lower teeth. There are two types:

Conventional Night Guards are custom fit appliances best able to withstand forces of biting and can be made with or without metal retention clasps.

Temporary Night Guards are custom fit, pliable appliances that resemble sport guards. We can make these within 1-2 clinic days.

  • Man sleeping peacefully in bed with his head on a pillow

    Snore Guards

Snore guards are removable appliances are designed to improve air flow by moving the lower jaw slightly forward. This improved air flow reduces air way restrictions and helps to reduce snoring sounds.

These appliances differ from Sport Guards and Night Guards by fitting on both the upper and lower teeth. We make custom-fitted patented EMA snore guards.

Some insurances will provide coverage for this when prescribed by a medical doctor. Contact our Reception Desk for more information regarding insurance coverage and snore guards.

Why Choose us for Mouth Guards?

  • iTero digital dental practice display with text 'No more goopy impression trays'.

    Digital Scan

We’ve invested in digital scanning technology with an iTero Digital Mouth Scanner.

Don’t like goopy dental impression trays? Do you have a gag reflex? We can use this scanner to take a digital scan of your mouth (the scanner takes thousands of images every second) and generates a digital 3D model of your mouth, which we can 3D print in our clinic.

    Selection

Every patient and every mouth is unique. We can make recommendations regarding the right mouth guard or sport guard for you.

We offer a variety of mouth guards at Harvest Dental Care. We can customize depending on what you need. Sometimes a strap is needed (for football helmets) or professional reinforcement (for kick boxing and mixed martial arts).

  • Close-up of a person with white teeth and a dental mirror in their mouth

    Custom-made Fit

We just don’t hand you the mouth guard. We try it in the clinic with a doctor to make sure that you are happy with the final product.

Chair side adjustments get the perfect fit made for your mouth. We can adjust extensions and coverage of your mouth guard right in our clinic so that you use your mouth guard and focus on the activity you are playing.

Preventative Dental Care

Avoid tooth loss, root canals, fillings and other restorative dentistry with routine maintenance including dental cleanings and check-ups.

Solve Small Dental Problems

In many cases, we can preseve tooth structure and prevent tooth loss by addressing problems when they are smaller. Even some fillings can be done without dental freezing if they are in the enamel surface of the tooth. Our conservative dentists will sometimes do a “watch” or “observe” to see if changes are occuring before recommending treatment.

Goals for Our Patients

Our goal for every patients once they receive dental treatment is to become a “Recare Patient” where the only annual needs you have during a year is a cleaning and check-up. Our dentists and hygienists will recommend preventative approaches so that you need as little dentistry as possible.

Smile Design

If your teeth are healthy, we can help improve the cosmetic apperance of teeth for a more youthful and vibrant look!
