Why have a Dental Cleaning & Check-up?

Professional Dental Cleanings

A Professional Dental Cleaning effectively eliminates deposits and tartar that toothbrushes alone cannot manage. These deposits are typically stubborn and require the expertise of a Hygienist (Registered Dental Hygienists or RDH that are regulated by the Alberta College of Dental Hygienists). Dental cleanings help to safeguard against gum recession, bone loss (gum disease), and the potential loss of teeth.

Professional Dental Check-ups

A dental check-up involves a thorough inspection of your teeth and oral tissues by a Dentist (a doctor registered with the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta). Only a Dentist can assesses dental x-rays to assess the health both your teeth and bones. They also visually examine the surfaces of your teeth and gums for any indications of decay or disease. Why is it important to have these check-ups regularly by a dentist? It’s easier to fix small problems before they develop into larger ones.

Digital Dental Scanning

Our Hygienists will use an iTero Dental Scanner (using photography) to take a digital record of your teeth and gums so that we can track recession and tooth wear. These same digital records can be used to make you a night guard, mouth guard (sport guard) or a snore guard.

Dental Cleaning Process

  • Dental professional using a suction device on a woman during a dental exam.

    Diagnosis

Our Hygienists will only take the necessary set of X-rays to assess the health of your mouth. In many cases, we will also perform a 3D photographic scan of your mouth (we call this a Dental Health Scan using an iTero Digital Scanner).

  • A woman at the dental office with her mouth open, getting a checkup from a dentist wearing gloves with dental tools.

    Tartar

We use instruments that generate low pressure sound waves to gently remove the tartar deposits from the tooth's surface. We provide options for sensitive teeth. Our team will develop a custom cleaning plan around your specific needs.

  • Close-up of a patient receiving dental treatment with a dental drill near the upper teeth and a person wearing gloves.

    Polishing

Once the teeth have been cleaned of deposits, we polish the tooth surfaces to eliminate any surface stains and leave a smooth surface which prevents new stains and deposits from accumulating.

  • Woman sitting in dental chair smiling inside dental office

    Remineralization

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. Fluoride exposure to the teeth can reverse the early signs of decay and reminerlize the tooth’s surface.

Our Dental Check-up Process

  • A dentist examining a woman's mouth in a dental clinic.

    Evaluation

We will take record measurements, dental imaging and clinical examination to check your current dental presentation.

This is a very important first step in improving and educating you about your dental health.

  • A dentist in gloves showing a digital tablet to a smiling patient in a dental office.

    Discussion

We review your concerns, discuss our findings, and then educate you about any concerns and treatment options.

We believe in informed consent where you decide what is best for your health from available options. We will review preventative recommendations.

  • Close-up of a dental chart with a magnifying glass inspecting the teeth.

    Planning

A treatment plan outlines your treatment choices made during the discussion part of your visit.

We develop a plan with appointments so that you can start your treatment. We strategize treatment that is a priority and take into account your dental insurance benefits.
