What is Tooth Removal?

When Does a Tooth need to be removed?

Tooth removal is also referred to as Tooth Extraction. When a tooth reaches a point where it must be removed, it's typically due to a variety of reasons, such as extensive decay, failing root canal treatments, irreparable damage, or severe gum disease. This procedure, known as tooth extraction, is performed to alleviate pain and prevent further oral health complications.

While tooth removal may seem daunting, it is often a straightforward and relatively painless process. Our Dentists will prioritize your comfort and will discuss suitable options for tooth replacement if necessary, ensuring your smile remains healthy and functional.

Wisdom Tooth Pain

Wisdom tooth pain refers to the discomfort or soreness experienced when the third molars, known as wisdom teeth, emerge in the back of the mouth. This pain can be caused by various factors, including impaction (when the tooth doesn't have enough room to come in properly), pressure on adjacent teeth, or inflammation of the surrounding gum tissue. Wisdom tooth pain can range from mild discomfort to severe throbbing pain, and it often prompts individuals to seek dental care to address the issue and alleviate their discomfort.

Preventative Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are often recommended for removal for several reasons. These late-arriving molars can lead to various dental issues, including impaction, crowding, and misalignment of adjacent teeth. They can also be challenging to clean properly, making them prone to decay and gum disease. Wisdom teeth removal is a preventive measure that can spare you from potential pain, discomfort, and oral health problems down the road, ensuring the overall well-being of your smile. In some cases, we will refer you to an Oral Surgeon for treatment.

Typical reasons for tooth removal

  • Failing Root Canals

Tooth removal becomes a consideration when a root canal treatment fails to resolve the infection or discomfort, necessitating the extraction of the affected tooth.

Our dentists take the time to carefully assess the need for removal of failing root canal treatments.

  • Wisdom Teeth

Tooth removal is often performed when erupted or unerupted wisdom teeth cause pain, impaction, or dental complications due to their positioning in the mouth.

Our dentists will evaluate the need for wisdom teeth removal and the best path for your dental care.

  • Crack or Fracture

Tooth removal may be necessary in cases of severe cracks or fractures that compromise the tooth's structural integrity and cannot be effectively repaired.

Our dentists will perform both clinical and radiographic tests to determine if a crack or fracture needs tooth removal.

  • Gum Disease

Gum disease can lead to tooth removal when it progresses to an advanced stage, jeopardizing the overall health of the affected tooth and surrounding tissues.

Our dentists can provide second opinions and interim treatments including replacement options when gum disease becomes the cause of tooth loss.

  • Dental Implants

Dental implants are sophisticated, artificial tooth roots that provide a strong and long-lasting foundation for replacement teeth, restoring both function and aesthetics to a patient's smile.

At Harvest Dental Care, we only use branded implants and implant parts. Using Heath Canada approved implant systems and purchasing from authorized distributors are part of what we do. Learn more: Dental Implants →

  • Fixed Bridges

Dental bridges are a reliable solution for replacing missing teeth, consisting of one or more artificial teeth anchored in place by crowns on adjacent healthy teeth to restore your smile's function and appearance.

Our Harvest Dental Care dentists can discuss the benefits and disadvantages of dental bridges in terms of restoration and costs. Dental implants are not always the best solution and individual assessment is important.

  • Partial Dentures

Partial dentures offer a removable and cost-effective option for replacing missing teeth by attaching artificial teeth to a framework that comfortably fits within the oral cavity.

In some cases, we use this as a temporary measure to replace teeth while waiting for dental implant healing. Other times this can be a solution while you decide whether to pursue a bridge or dental imlant.

  • Do Nothing

While an option, failure to restore the space left by a tooth removal can lead to various complications, including neighboring teeth shifting, bite problems, and potential jawbone loss.

This option also can affect function and increase pressure on the remaining teeth. However, this can always be an option for posterior teeth while you are considering the placement of a dental implant, bridge or partial denture.

Diagnosis

If you haven’t been to our clinic before, we take the time to assess the need for tooth removal. We accept emergency patients (pain) and also accept second opinions.

Options

Our dentists will offer options for tooth removal and options to keep a tooth (if this is possible) which may include:

  • Root Canal Treatment

  • Dental Crowns

  • Gum Treatments

  • Fillings

  • Temporary Treatments (strategies to keep a tooth for short periods of time)

Emergency Care

Tooth removal may become necessary in cases of severe dental discomfort, where the tooth's structure and surrounding tissues are compromised. Dental problems can result from deep cavities, periodontal disease, or lesions, causing pain and discomfort.

Removing the infected tooth not only alleviates pain but also prevents the spread of disease to other parts of the mouth or body. Our Dentists professionals prioritize your comfort and often offer options for tooth replacement to restore function and maintain the overall health of the smile
